Lake Highlands, Dallas

A short walk from White Rock Lake and its nine mile loop, on the quiet side of Dallas.

When to come

Dallas has two stretches that are actually pleasant outdoors. October and November, when the heat breaks and the White Rock loop fills up with people again. Then March into early May, before summer arrives, which is when the Arboretum is at its best.

Coffee

White Rock Coffee, and specifically the original Lake Highlands shop that the other six grew out of. They roast on site, so the beans are as fresh as they get in this city, and there's a quiet upstairs if you have brought work with you.

Breakfast

Lake Highlands Cafe on Abrams Road. It's a neighborhood diner rather than a destination, which is exactly the point. Everyone who lives around here has a standing order, and you can be in and out before the lake gets busy.

One thing to do

The Bath House Cultural Center on the east shore of White Rock Lake. A 1930s art deco bathhouse turned gallery and small theater, sitting right on the water, and it's free. Visitors do the Arboretum and drive straight past it.

Worth your time

  • White Rock Lake loop

    Nine miles around the water. Walk a piece of it early, before Dallas wakes up.

  • Bath House Cultural Center

    Five twenty one East Lawther. Free art deco gallery on the lake shore that nobody tells you about.

  • White Rock Coffee

    The original Lake Highlands roastery. Quiet upstairs, drive through on Mockingbird.

  • Lake Highlands Cafe

    Sixty seven fifty one Abrams. The neighborhood breakfast, and the portions are not shy.

  • Dallas Arboretum

    On the far side of the lake. Worth it, but go at opening rather than at noon.
